Region profile

Extremadura is a region situated in the south-west of Spain. The capital city is Merida, a millenary Roman City which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region has a large range of self government, and includes two provinces, Badajoz and Caceres, which are the two largest provinces of Spain.

Extremadura is bordering Portugal and the Spanish regions of Castilla-Leon, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia. The Region has a size of 41.633 km² and a population of 1.1 million, entailing a density of 25 people per square kilometer, which is very low in comparison with 91.4 in Spain and 116.5 in the European Union. The territory is predominantly rural, there is only one city with a population of more than 100.000 (Badajoz City).

The climate is predominantly Mediterranean, with the exception of the north (continental) and the west (influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, making the climate milder). The main characteristic is a very hot and dry summer, with great droughts, and its long and mild winters due to the oceanic influence.

In Extremadura there are 60 nature protected areas, 1500 km of riverside coast and a rich historical and cultural heritage. The main economic sectors are agriculture and services, including tourism. Extremadura has never had an industrial tradition.
